Last meeting

There are no ACC divisions this year only, but Louisville is in the Atlantic and Georgia Tech the Coastal. They thus don’t play every year. They last did in 2018 when Louisville was absolutely terrible and lost 66-31 at home to the Yellow Jackets. Georgia Tech ran for 542 yards, among the most in school history and the second most ever yielded by the Cardinals. In their first nine drives, the Yellow Jackets scored eight touchdowns and a field goal. Then they got a 95-yard interception return for a score from Juanyeh Thomas with 2:18 left.

Friday is just the second all-time meeting between the schools and the first at Tech.

The Cardinals (1-2) were ranked briefly but have fallen out of the Top 25 after back-to-back losses to ranked Miami and Pittsburgh. The Cards were last in action on Sept. 26 and beaten 23-20 at Pitt. The Panthers had seven sacks and held UofL to 223 yards. Cards star QB Malik Cunningham completed just 9 of 21 passes for 107 yards with a touchdown and three picks, the last a fourth-down interception by Pitt’s Jason Pinnock with 1:19 remaining.

Running back Javian Hawkins has rushed for a touchdown in five consecutive games dating back to the 2019 season after his 75-yard scoring run in a loss to Pittsburgh. Wide receiver Tutu Atwell has scored 15 touchdowns in his last 15 games, moving into a tie for eighth all-time at Louisville with 17 receiving touchdowns, tying former tight end Gary Barnidge.

Cunningham was taken off the field on a stretcher following his fourth-down heave that ended up in the hands of Pitt’s Jason Pinnock with 1:19 to go. However, the QB is good to go this week without limitations. Cunningham is considered one of the best quarterbacks in the ACC and has been off to a strong start statistically. He’s sixth in the ACC with 757 yards and second with seven touchdowns.

However, he has been a bit inaccurate. Last year, Cunningham threw five interceptions on 178 attempts. He has five interceptions through three games this season on 91 attempts. He’s on pace for 331 passing attempts this season. Coach Scott Satterfield said some have just been bad decision making.

The back-to-back losses to Miami and Pitt mark the first time the Cardinals have lost consecutive games under Satterfield.

The Cardinals allowed 23 points and 376 yards of total offense in the loss to the Panthers, but spent most of the game in Pitt’s backfield, recording a season high 11 tackles for loss. After three games, the Cardinals are eighth in the nation in tackles for loss with 9.0 per game, with linebacker Dorian Etheridge leading the way with an average of 2.83 per game.

The Jackets (1-2) also have dropped two in a row and also last played Sept. 26, losing 37-20 at Syracuse. Georgia Tech posted its third-straight 400-yard game on offense to begin the season, but five turnovers and 15 penalties proved to be too much to overcome. Tech’s five turnovers led to 17 Orange points, which proved to be the final margin. Despite falling into a 17-0 hole in the first quarter, the Yellow Jackets pulled within three points at 23-20 on Jamious Griffin’s 3-yard touchdown run with 1:29 to go in the third period.

A bright spot for Georgia Tech was the running back duo of true freshman Jahmyr Gibbs and sophomore Dontae Smith. They rushed for 180 of Tech’s 275 yards on the ground, 105 for Gibbs and 75 for Smith. Playing in just his second collegiate game, Gibbs became the first Georgia Tech true freshman with 100 rushing yards in a game since Dedrick Mills in the 2016 TaxSlayer Bowl.

Georgia Tech’s 15 penalties were the second-most that Tech has committed in a game in program history (record: 19 vs. Florida State, Sept. 9, 2000).

The loss snapped Tech’s 13-game winning streak against rotating opponents from the ACC Atlantic Division. It was the Yellow Jackets’ first loss to a rotating Atlantic Division opponent since a 45-28 defeat at NC State on Sept. 25, 2010.
