2020 Sanderson Farms Championship Expert Analysis

While the 2020 calendar year is turning to the cooler weather that fall annually brings the current PGA Tour season is starting to heat up nicely as we get set for the quickly approaching 2020 Masters Invitational. While this year’s Masters isn’t scheduled to get underway until just over a month from now, on Nov. 15, the 2020 Sanderson Farms Championship will serve as a nice tune-up as one of six events on the 2020-21 PGA Tour calendar prior to the most coveted event in all of professional golf.

A part of the PGA Tour since its inception in 1968, the Sanderson Farms Championship is in its second year of giving full FedEx Cup points to the winner. Keep in mind, that the last six winners of the Sanderson Farms Championship have all been first-time PGA Tour winners, including 2019 champion Sebastian Munoz. Now, let’s take a look at the PGA odds before I get to my top five picks to bring home the bacon.

No. 5  Sergio Garcia

My No. 5 pick is none other than veteran, Sergio Garcia. I know the 40-year-old Spaniard has missed the cut at his last two events at the Safeway Open and U.S. Open and that he never finished better than his T5 at the RBC Heritage last season, but that also leads me to believe the 2017 Masters champ is way overdue for a victory. Garcia is10-time PGA Tour winner that also has recorded 20 career wins in international competition. No, Garcia never lived up to expectations that he would once become Tiger Woods’ biggest challenger, but Garcia ranks an encouraging 27th in driving distance (305.8) and 60th in greens in regulation. Yes, he’s a longshot, but Garcia still checks in as my No. 5 pick to win this weekend.

No. 4 Scottie Scheffler

While the 24-year-old Texas native has recorded three top-5 finishes in his last four events, but Scheffler also hasn’t teed it up since the Tour Championship after being forced to withdraw from the U.S. Open. While I am expecting the clearly talented former University of Texas star to challenge for the win, I’m going the ‘rust’ theory to keep the FedEx No. 5 from winning it all.

No. 3 Sam Burns

If you don’t know much about the 24-year-old Burns, then you should know that he’s currently 18th in the FedEx rankings and really talented. While Burns closed out last season by missing the cut in two of his final three appearances, he also five Top 32 finishes and two Top-20 finishes over his last seven tournaments. Burns finished tied for third in this event in 2018 and T-45 last year, but he’s gotten his 2020-21 campaign off to a positive start by finishing T7 at the Safeway Open and T28 at last week’s Corales Puntacana event. Burns should have a great shot to get the win this weekend.

No. 2 Will Zalatoris

The 24-year-old former Wake Forest superstar has been on fire since the start of the 2020 calendar year. In 16 events on the Korn Ferry Tour, Zalatoris had one win, one second place finish, one third place finish and 10 Top-10 finishes. The California native also racked up a whopping 14 Top-25 finishes while never missing a cut. More importantly, Zalatoris finished an impressive sixth at the U.S. Open and T8 at last week’s Corales Puntacana event. Make no mistake about it, Zalatoris is on fire!

No. 1 Sungjae Im

There’s a reason the 22-year-old Im is the No. 2 pick on the odds list and my favorite to win this event. The South Korean recorded one victory, one second place finish, a pair of third place finishes and seven Top-10 finishes last season while winning the Honda Classic in March. Im also recorded 11 Top-25 finishes while making the cut 21 times in 26 events. Im finished 22nd at the U.S. Open and he’s my top pick to get it done this weekend.
