Rafael Nadal and Iga Swiatek take French Open titles

By winning his thirteenth French Open title, Rafael Nadal tied rival Roger Federer for the most major championships in tennis history. Rafa’s victory at Roland-Garros wasn’t a foregone conclusion.

He battled the top-ranked player in the world, Novak Djokovic, and although Nadal handled Djokovic 6-0, 6-2, 7-5 in straight sets, heading into the match some believed Novak might have Rafa’s number. Nadal hadn’t played competitively since the tennis shutdown while Djokovic was on his way to a U.S. Open title before making a dreadful mistake that caused a disqualification.

Nadal proved again that he is indeed the King of Clay. Rafa has won 92% of his matches on the surface. He’s won 445 of 485 clay matches.

Over on the women’s side, a young tennis star emerged. 19-year-old Iga Swiatek from Warsaw, Poland, dominated favored 4-seed Sofia Kenin 6-4, 6-1. Earlier at the French Open, Swatek beat 1-seed Simona Halep 6-1, 6-2.

Any time a young tennis player knocks out a 1-seed and 4-seed on her way to a championship, it’s special. In this case, it’s particularly special because Iga didn’t just beat Halep and Kenin, she towered above her favored opponents.

Swiatek played impeccable tennis throughout the tournament. She didn’t lose a single set on her way to winning the major title. Iga won a junior Grand Slam in 2018. Last year, her first as pro, Swiatek didn’t win a title, but she did show flashes of being a great player.

Everything came together for Iga at the French Open. Don’t expect this young tennis phenom to go away any time soon. Although she didn’t go home with a trophy in 2019, she did go 33-16 and earn $633,807.

She also made it to the fourth round at the 2020 Australian Open and the third round at the U.S. Open. Iga Swiatek is for real.

2021 Australian Open the next big major

The Australian Open is the next major tournament. Novak Djokovic is a +110 favorite while both Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer offer +500 to +600 odds.

Also in the +500 to +600 odds category are Daniil Medvedev and Dominic Thiem. It took Djokovic five sets to beat Thiem at the 2020 Australian Open, making Novak an underlay favorite at +110.
