The 2020 French Open Semifinals are just about set. Over on the men’s singles side, the two top players look destined for a weekend finals throw down. Only two seeded players have made it to the semifinals on the women’s side, though. Check out an update on the 2020 French Open odds!

French Open Men’s Singles: Schwartzman bounces Thiem

Dominic Thiem beat Alexander Zverev at last month’s U.S. Open to win the title. Most believed that since Thiem won the U.S. Open, he’d carry momentum into the French Open. After all, Thiem had made it to the French Open Finals twice in the past two years, falling to Rafael Nadal both times.

In the quarterfinals, though, Diego Schwartzman bounced the French Open second choice from the tournament. It took Schwartzman eight sets to get by Thiem. Schwartzman had to win three extra sets to stamp his ticket to the semis.

On October 9, the 12th seeded Argentinian battles the great Rafael Nadal. Diego will find it difficult to hang with Rafa. Nadal hasn’t lost a set yet during the French Open. He’s had to play one extra set, in his quarterfinal victory over Jannik Sinner, and is on top of his game. If Schwartzman pulls off the upset, it might be one of the biggest in tennis history.

On the other side of the bracket, Novak Djokovic should handle 17th seed Pablo Carreno Busta. Busta has played well but Novak is on a mission. He has yet to lose a set.

In the final quarterfinal match, Andrey Rublev and Stefanos Tsitsipas are battling at the time of this writing. Check your favorite online sports news source to see if Rublev or Tsitsipas won that match.

French Open Women’s Singles: Swiatek upsets Halep

19-year-old Polish player Iga Swiatek didn’t know that she was supposed to lose to the top-ranked women’s tennis player in the world. Swiatek knocked Simona Halep out of the French Open with a spirited 6-1, 6-2 straight set victory.

Iga beat Martina Trevisan 6-3, 6-1 to stamp her ticket to the semifinals where she’ll take on Nadia Podoraska. Like Swiatek, Podoraska is un-seeded. That’s not the case for the semifinal match on the other side of the bracket.

21-year-old 4-seed Sofia Kenin takes on 7-seed Petra Kvitova. Petra has never won the French Open. This is her second semi at Roland-Garros, though. Sofia won the 2020 Australian Open in January. This will be just her second semifinal appearance in a major tournament. Both tournaments happen on October 8.

2020 French Open Finals this weekend

The French Open Finals take place over the weekend. On the men’s side, both Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic look solid. But on the women’s side it’s a different story.

Sofia Kenin is the highest-ranked player left in the tournament. Swiatek bet 1-seed Simona Halep, Jalena Ostepenko knocked out 2-seed Karolina Pliskova and Serena Williams retired in the second round after suffering an injury.

Will Kenin win her second major of 2020? If she does, we can officially say that the torch has passed to the next young women’s tennis star.
