NCAAF Top 25 Rankings: Winners & Losers Expert Analysis

With Week 6 of the 2020 NCAA college football season upon us, it’s time to take a look back at the week that was and how several teams in the national Top 25 fared in their efforts to pick up confidence-boosting and CFP-improving victories. Seven teams make up this week’s list of winners and losers, now let’s find out who they are as we get set for the upcoming weekend of action. Top 25 Rankings: Winners and Losers | College Football Betting Analysis

Winners

Florida (2-0)

Quarterback Kyle Trask looks like a legitimate Heisman Trophy candidate and the Gators look like a real College Football Playoff contender heading into Week 6. The Gators smacked South Carolina around in their 38-24 win on Saturday as Trask threw four TD passes. Florida cruised after going up 38-17 heading into the fourth quarter. Now, heading into Week 6, the Gators look dangerous with a capital ‘D’ college football betting enthusiasts.

SMU (4-0)

The unranked Mustangs took out the 25th-ranked Memphis Tigers 30-27 last week just as I predicted to move to 4-0 on the season. Former Texas quarterback Shane Buechele looked fantastic in passing for 474 yards with three TD passes and no picks while the SMU defense harassed Memphis’ Brady White into a pair of costly interceptions while getting three sacks and two fumble recoveries. Don’t look now, but I can easily see the Mustangs joining the national rankings inside of the next week or two tops, provided they keep on winning.

Alabama (2-0)

The second-ranked Crimson Tide not only improved to 2-0 on the season, but they did so in style. Alabama trashed Texas A&M 52-24 on Saturday while outscoring the Aggies in all four quarters. Quarterback Mac Jones was impressive in completing 20 of 27 passes for 3435 yards with four touchdowns and one pick – or maybe it was Texas A&M’s awful defense that helped make Jones look like a star. Whatever the case, Alabama was a Week 5 ‘winner’ in my book

Losers

Oklahoma (1-2)

18th-ranked Oklahoma suffered their second straight loss to a Big 12 rival they were supposed to be much better than. To make matters worse, quarterback Spencer Rattler looked ‘rattled’ for the second straight game despite passing for 300 yards with two touchdowns. Not only that, but Oklahoma’s defense gave up over 30 points for the second straight week while getting gashed by running back Breece Hall to the tune of 139 yards and two scores. Simply put, you can forget any CFP hopes the Sooners had!

Texas (1-1)

Ranked ninth before their Week 5 home date against in-state rival TCU, Texas came up short in their crushing 33-31 Week 5 loss against the, then, unranked Horned Frogs. Sam Ehlinger’s four TD passes went to waste as the Longhorns defense gave up 227 rushing yards and three scores on the ground. Offensively, Texas saw Ehlinger picked off once while running back Keontay Ingram coughed up one fumble. With upcoming games against desperate Oklahoma, in-state rival Baylor and 10th-ranked Oklahoma State on the docket for the next three weeks, I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see Texas suffer two or three more losses this season.

Auburn (1-1)

The Tigers had some College Football Playoff hopes, but saw them totally disintegrate thanks to their pitiful performance in Saturday’s embarrassing 27-6 loss against No. 3 Georgia. Quarterback Bo Nix was supposed to be a Heisman contender this season, but Georgia’s defense harassed him into a 21-for-40 outing with zero touchdown passes. Auburn couldn’t run the ball either and finished with just 31 rushing yards. Ouch!

Texas A&M

Any hopes Texas A&M had of potentially making a run at reaching the CFP was totally ended in their 52-24 loss to Alabama last weekend. Quarterback Kellen Mond was solid in passing for 318 yards with three touchdowns and one interception, but the Aggies’ rushing attack was mostly awful and the defense was basically non-existent.
